Atlas THON Updates

Let me start by welcoming all of you who are new to Atlas. It was amazing to see so many new people (and all the old ones!) at our first meeting. I am looking forward to getting to know you!

We are aware that we often go over a lot of material quickly at meetings and that you may not be able to make every meeting. Do not fear! Every week I will send out an email with important information, updates, and what to look forward to. If you still have any questions do not hesitate to email myself or any other exec member.

Now to the updates…

  1. Tonight is the Annual THON Spikes Game in Medlar Field at Lubrano Park (near Beaver Stadium) at 7:00 p.m.! If you bought a ticket through us, meet at the stadium at 6:30 p.m. to receive it. If you did not order tickets through Atlas, you are still able to come! Either buy your tickets for $6 at the THON office in 210 HUB or before the game. This is a great chance to meet some Atlas members, our family the Smith’s, and earn Atlas points. Please wear your Atlas green if you have it! Call Alli Shultz at (732) 857-7493 if you cannot find anyone.

  2. Check out our Web site. All information is always available here. Also, join our Angel group by searching for Atlas THON.

  3. Next Atlas meeting will be this Sunday, September 7 at 8:00 p.m. in 121 Sparks. Bring your friends! I hope to see you all then!

  4. Mark your calendars:

    • September 14 — Atlas THON Scavenger Hunt
    • October 1 — Fundraising begins for THON 2009
    • October 10-12 — First Canning Weekend
    • October 26 — THON 5K

I am so pumped for this upcoming year. Last year, we accomplished great things and I know we will only continue to grow as an organization and more importantly as a family.

First Atlas Meeting for THON 2009

I hope that these last days of summer find each and every one of you well and as excited as I am to return to PSU to kick off an amazing year. I can already tell that this year has A LOT of exciting things in store. So now, for some important information…

  1. First Atlas Meeting for THON 2009

Drum roll please… The first Atlas THON meeting will be held Sunday, August 31 at 8 p.m. in 101 Thomas! We are excited to kick off this year and can’t wait to see everyone again!

  2. Captain Applications

Applications for captain positions are now available at www.thon.org. A list and description of all captain positions can be found at the website. Applications are due by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, August 29.

I highly encourage everyone who is thinking of applying for a position to do so. It is an amazing experience and I am confident that any Atlas member could do a great job. If you would like to talk to someone who has been a captain before, feel free to email me and I will get you in contact with someone.

  3. Update on Victoria and the Smiths

The Smiths are enjoying their summer. Victoria attended camp, and Steph celebrated her birthday with the family at the beginning of July. Victoria had her port removed on July 1st, and she came out of the surgery very well. Since then, they’ve been seeing an orthopedist to get answers about the curve in her spine that has been showing on her X-rays, but the doctor does not specialize in spines. Hershey will be getting someone who does in September. Steph said that Victoria has had a great week and they are excited to see her so happy.

If you have not done so yet, please take the time to register at carepages.com so you can receive all the updates on Victoria’s progress and get to know the Smith’s better. It also allows you to leave the Smith’s good wishes.

Again, I cannot wait to return to school and kick off Atlas 2009. Hope your move back goes smoothly!

Summer Updates

I hope everyone is thoroughly enjoying there summers. I know this time of year is weird… you’re away from your friends, there are months before the next canning weekend, you have nothing to look forward to on Sunday nights at 8:00 p.m. But fear not! There is still plenty you can do for THON throughout this summer. So, here it is, the list of the top 10 things you can do to help THON and Atlas this summer:

  1. Register at Carepages to keep track of everything Victoria is up to this summer. While you’re at it, post a note on her message board or send the Smith’s an email.
  2. Keep your eyes open and jot down any businesses that we may be able to acquire donations from in the fall, feel free to send to Brian Buterbaugh or Dan Levy
  3. Mark your calenders… captain applications are available August 18!
  4. Talk to your parents about hosting a canning weekend next year or bringing your car for a semester or even just a week to help us with drivers
  5. Recruit new members! You all probably know of someone coming to PSU next year or someone already here looking to get more involved. Tell them how awesome Atlas is and convince them to join our Facebook group.
  6. See an many Atlas people as possible at Arts Fest!
  7. Talk to friends and family about donating next year. Start a list of people’s names and address who you want to send letters to.
  8. Visit your towns municipal center to see about obtaining permits for canning. If you get applications, fill them out or feel free to email them to Alli Shultz. We have money if need be!
  9. Know of an old school of yours or an organization looking to have a fundraiser? Is a mini-THON right for your old school? Or get creative and come up with a new way for us to fundraise!
  10. Get excited for next year!

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me either via Facebook or to email at Alli Shultz. I miss you all and can’t wait until next semester! Be sure to keep watching for other updates throughout the summer. Only 8 months, 2 days until THON 2009!

Victoria’s End-of-Treatment Party

Victoria’s End-of-Treatment Party is coming up at the end of this month and you’ve all been invited!

If you can make it up (or down) to State College on May 25, it would be an awesome way to show your support for Victoria and for her family. Plus, it will be a day of food and fun with our amazing THON family and another chance for everyone to get to know them better.

The party begins at 3 p.m. and go until whenever and it will be held at the Smith’s house (124 Rhapsody Drive, Port Matildam 16870). If you can come, please email Emily Cassidy or Michelle Thiry before Saturday so we can get a total and we can let Stephanie know how many hungry college kids will be showing up.

Please try to make it, because Victoria’s recovery and happiness is what Atlas is really all about. This is really something to celebrate!

More Big Updates

Dates to remember:

I am sad that this year is coming to an end and will miss you all dearly over the summer. Luckily, there are ample opportunities to get together before them. I encourage as many people as possible to come out to the first committee meetings tomorrow. The formal committee will meet at 6:00 p.m. at the HUB tables by the fish tanks, and the recruitment committee will meet at 7:00 p.m. at the HUB tables by the fish tank. We will be selecting recruitment co-chairs at the committee meeting tomorrow. If you are interested in one of these positions, you must attend at the meeting.

Thursday, May 1 will be the First Annual Atlas THON Social! It will be from 9:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. as the Acacia fraternity house. The cost is $15 per person and includes entrance, as much “milk and cookies” as you would like, and an awesome time with your Atlas friends. We received a lot of feedback saying we didn’t do enough as a team. Well, here is your chance to come out, see your friends, and possibly make new friends. You are welcome to bring non-Atlas guests and dates, particularly if you know someone interested in becoming involved with Atlas next year. The dress is semi-formal.

The money for formal is due by this Friday, April 25. You can purchase tickets from any chair. We will be having Atlas office hours during the next two days as well. The schedule is as follows:

The chairs will be sitting at the tables in the HUB by the convenience store Barney’s across from the fish tanks.

Finally, if you are graduating this spring, please email Brian Buterbaugh with your name, email, future address, and any other contact information. We are looking to start our alumni database and could really use your help.

THON Is Tomorrow

We will be having an extremely important meeting Sunday night, 101 Thomas at 8 p.m. We will be talking about our social/semi-formal plans, our Blue & White tailgate with the Smith family, and forming a team for Relay for Life. In addition, we will be hearing brief speeches and then voting for the future of our organization (please bring a pen/pencil!). Atlas points will be awarded for attendance as well so please note that for those seriously considering dancing next year, you will need to be engaged all year round.

THON is tomorrow. THON is all year long. THON is at all times. Keep working hard and together we will find a cure. See you Sunday night!
